Preview: Jack Roberts Heebie Jeebies

JACK Roberts has drawn comparison to heavyweights Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, with his growling vocals and powerful songwriting.

Liverpool’s musical maverick is back with jaunty anthem Heart Attack – the lead-single taken from his second studio album The Romance, The Row, The Wreck due in winter 2011 on London indie label Tip Top Recordings.

He’s launching the single with a free gig on Friday, September 16 at Heebie Jeebies. The night for other Tip Top Recordings acts Royal Treatment Plant and Blue On Blue.

Jack Roberts’ music combines filmic epics, raucous punk and a subtle folk and blues sound.

Making his mark in the Merseyside band scene, Jack signed to Sony to produce his debut 1994 LP Longer On A Message. The acclaimed album featured singles Radio, Taxi and Any Day Now – songs that proved hits at Jack’s Glastonbury appearance on the acoustic stage and led to tour support slots with Crash Test Dummies, Robyn Hitchcock, Jah Wobble, Tragically Hip, Jeff Healey, The Christians, Thomas Lang and Horse before playing The Royal Albert Hall and ECHO arena (where he performed the Beatles classic Ticket to Ride to 10,000 people).

He’s recently supported Nick Harper, Son Of Dave, Brute Chorus, Rachel Sage and Ruarri Joseph. Over the years, his performances have become increasingly avant-garde, with everything from a bicycle pump to a biscuit tin.

He’ll be joined by Royal Treatment Plant, currently working on their own upcoming second album, Halfway To The Sun. The classically trained London-based five-piece, led by Australian singer/guitarist Paula Steel, shone at In The City, Camden Crawl and on bills with Marina & The Diamonds, Micachu, Young Knives & Los Camposinos! before signing to Universal and now Tip Top.

Blue on Blue Šrelease their feverishly awaited debut four-track EP on Tip Top this Autumn.

London duo Blue On Blue have already supported the Charlatans on their recent UK Tour – as Tim Burgess’ favourite new band – and grabbed the attention of fans and critics with stripped down ethereal shoe-gaze beats. Dee Sada (An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump) and Billy Trivial bring dreamy daytime darkness and wide-eyed odes to all night parties.

Jack Roberts plays the Tip Top Recordings Showcase on Friday September 16. Entry is free.

Press Article: "Jack Roberts as Buddy Holly"

From Glasswerk.co.uk:

"11,000 people sat in the brand new Liverpool Echo Arena waiting to here the Beatles ‘Ticket to Ride’…Jack Roberts enters with a face full of shaving foam looking more ready for bed than to perform to a sell out crowd!

His quirky opening and sublime rendition of the Beatles favourite mesmerised the packed stadium at The Number One Live Concert. His act was so compelling he received an invite to perform at the Liverpool tribute to Buddy Holly and the Crickets alongside Andy Steele, one of Liverpool’s renowned guitarists"

"Who Is Jack Roberts?

That’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves for a while now! Hidden behind his stage persona, his animated characters and a tumultuous voice you will find something very real: Jack Roberts!

Jack Roberts writes songs, performs them, records them; he’s an animator, an artist, and a general genius! He’s performed at Glastonbury and is well known in Liverpool for his time in the band ‘The Bingo Brothers.’"

Press Quotes

Lancashire Evening Post (Phil Widdows)  - 'With his growling, gravelly vocals Jack is certainly not background music. A mix of powerful lyrics and strong beats - he could be Britain's answer to Paul Simon'

Reviewed by Amanda DeAngeles - Nerve Magazine - "Jack Roberts is a little bit more than mature with the mind of a sneaky kid. He's from Little Sutton, Wirral-side (accompanied by the fabulous Mr. Edwards on piano) Jack can KNOCK OUT a song! He is a brilliant singer and a theatrical comic-genius. His song lyrics are masterful and he was a treat better than any dessert, potion or "ointment" as the penultimate act of the night."

For Jack's previous album:

Huddersfield Daily Examiner -  Album of the week 'All the pent up frustration and determination tumbles out in a glut of songs strewn with real passion. He moves from deeply reflective ballads to jaunty anthems with total ease. Instruments only used when they have to be - that's how strong the songs are'

Brum Beat (Steve Morris)  - 'His music has a Celtic undercurrent to it - often uses a bodhran to formulate songs - the only blues connection being central honesty and emotional directness. Plus the fact that his defining influences include Leonard Bernstein's 'West Side Story'.

What's On in Birmingham - ref Crash Test Dummies Support (rock city Sunday October 23 1994 and Wolverhamptn Civic Hall Friday November 4 1994) 'Jack Roberts something of a maverick. He'd already turned 40 before last year's debut with prowlingly emotive 'live like a gun'. Now comes 'Longer on a Message' a stunning album rich in melody, soul and even calypso influences and mesmerisingly gruffly romantic songs of love, life and misery.
